A black outline goes around her and comes into a circle leaving a negative space of white. The lyrics to the song “After Hours” by the Velvet Underground go around the circle, following the shape. Depending on where you are in the world/in your life, you may be doing the final push to get through the end of school, or enjoying being on a break, or just plodding on and doing your own thing. Whatever is up, we hope you’re doing great.

Sometimes, the most comforting thing is knowing that you aren’t alone. Sometimes it feels like the world is so against you, trapping you in darkness and unable to see the light. Life can feel so lonely sometimes, especially when it seems like everyone else is happy during the summertime. Music is something that’s comforted me and “After Hours” by the Velvet Underground resonated with my recent emotions, thus inspiring me to create this piece about how I felt. It’s cheesy and cliche, but you are not alone. You have so much light around you and it’s hard to see, but you will make it through and we’re here for you and love you dearly. So listen to some music, make some art, and find comfort in the fact that others out there feel the same as you.
[Image description: A snapshot of dark green trees against gloomy clouds with a sudden warm sunbeam coming down in the middle. Written over the picture is a song lyric ‘The skies will break for you, my friend’ by Corrine Bailey Rae. The line ends off with a small heart. On the left, is a doodle of a girl with earphones and there are small musical notes next to her, floating a little.]
The only thing that will break
are your clouds of worry and doubt
making way for the ideas,
dreams and new plans
You’ve been polishing for
Far too long
Let it happen
I truly wish I could tell you that it gets easier. I wish I could tell you that hope is everlasting no matter what and that nothing can stop you. But the truth is, things will stop you. Things will hurt you in ways you could have never thought possible. But that is the cost of living. Living is difficult. However, whether your burdens be financial, emotional, or physical, dreaming won't ever cost you a cent. I can continue with a cheesy explanation that references the film Amelie with the quote “Times are hard for dreamers,” but I can't. I can't because nothing is ever that simple. You'll feel lost, alone, trapped, and scared, but that's just the way life goes. The one thing you can change is your perspective. Wherever you are and however you're feeling, I hope you know that everything is temporary. Even if it feels like forever, it isn't. If you need to get it out, the pain or the thoughts that leave you in oblivion then write it out, make some art, talk to someone, or even scream at a wall. Sometimes our thoughts and emotions are more tolerable when they reach the world beyond ourselves.

[image description: a hand holding a sparkler with the words ‘for when your feelings are weighing you down’ written on top and a list of songs running down the picture (dance with me - ra ra riot, i miss those days - bleachers, every day - magic man, you’re not alone - the mowgli’s, radar detector - darwin deez, dreamers - willa, cute - d.r.a.m., old school - urban cone, year zero - moon taxi, rib cage - nixe, dive - coast modern, happy accidents - saint motel, dance along - early hours, take that (max liese remix) - cruisr)]
Let Go is a playlist for when everything seems heavier. The playlist has 14 songs (that I think) are happy enough to lift the weight off your shoulders. Listen here.
It’s so cute how everybody who's contributed has shared with you some little thoughts that get them through. I guess we all have our things that we keep for ourselves when things are feeling a bit rough. For some of us these are cheesy insta quotes that make us smile or songs that understand us or characters that we try to channel to give us strength, or some of us just try to accept things and take comfort in realism. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for what helps you get through the world!
Maybe ‘don’t let anyone make you feel…’ is an opening for some not so useful advice. Sometimes we have as much control over our feelings as the weather, and we have even less control over other people. And I don’t mean to be saccharine, but I hope that other people treat you kindly, and the weather treats you kindly, but most importantly, I hope that you treat you kindly, because that it one thing you do have some control over!
So so much love, Vita xxx
