Love Trumps Hate: Non-Profit Organizations to Be Aware of and Donate To

With all of the turmoil and hatred going on, we know a lot of you want to be productive in pushing for change, but not all of you can go out and protest. So, to promote kindness, love, and everything that Trump is against, here are a list of non-profit organizations that you can look into and donate to!

Girl Up- All around the world, girls have obstacles in their way: from access to education and healthcare to the effects of poverty and wartime, Girl Up aims to empower these girls to achieve their potentials no matter what their circumstances. Through fundraising and activism, they provide the resources to make this possible. You can donate to their cause here and see where your money is going!

DoSomething- It can often be difficult for young people to find their feet to make a positive change in the world. DoSomething offers this platform, encouraging teens everywhere to campaign and get active on a range of issues - from homelessness to the environment to periods and beyond. In a climate where we so frequently undervalue the contributions of young people, charities like this are so important. You can donate here!

Planned Parenthood- This organisation, based in the United States, provides many essential services to the public: abortions, sexual healthcare, contraception and tests for STDs. They also have a section dedicated to sexuality and gender. In a world where these topics are often either taboo or subject to misinformation, having an organisation set up to inform and assist in these areas is so essential to keep healthy relationships and people. Malala Fund- Malala Yousafzai and her story have become such an inspiration for activists and women across the world, especially Muslim women. The Malala Fund, named in honour of her, seeks to maintain her legacy by providing 12 years of safe education for girls across the world, giving them the tools to empower themselves and spark change. Education is a key issue for girls in many countries - it is through organisations like this that they are allowed to thrive, explore their skills and meet their potentials. You can donate here.

Stand Up for Kids- Homeless youth is a massive issue in many different countries with many different causes. Stand Up for Kids aims to help these young people in America through volunteering out on the streets, sponsoring kids and providing life skills from anger management to financial management, all to help them improve their lives aaway from the streets. Border Angels- An all-volunteer organisation, Border Angels campaigns for humane immigration reform and social justice, centred particularly on the US-Mexico border. They offer assistance to migrants by leaving water along the desert route and offer first-hand experience of the border. In the climate we have now - one full of anti-immigration rhetoric - the myth-busting humanitarian work they do is absolutely vital. Donate here to help them continue this work.

Campaign Zero- It is no surprise that police brutality is a massive issue today. All you have to do is turn on the news. Campaign Zero is an organising tackling this issue with 10 clear solutions outlined, from abandoning Broken Windows policing to demilitarisation to community representation. Center for Hunger Free Communities- Poverty and hunger are major issues in our modern society. This Philadelphia-based organisation investigates the causes of this by actively engaging with the affected communities and providing them with resources and solutions, from food to peer-support groups to aid women break the cycle of poverty. Council on American-Islamic Relations- One of the most prominent forms of oppression in society today is Islamophobia, perpetuated by politicians and the media alike. Organisations like the Council on American-Islamic Relations aim to dismantle this. With the aim of achieving mutual understanding and justice, they work to educate others on what Islam truly is and empower American Muslims in a climate where they may feel disenfranchised. Movement for Justice by Any Means Necessary- Racism, anti-immigration and oppression in all its forms is also on the rise in the UK. Movement for Justice aim to tackle it through “any means necessary” - they march, protest, yell until they are heard, and plan to continue this until real substantial change occurs. One of their main projects is campaigning to shut down detention centres, in particular Yarl’s Wood, and both end the abuse of migrants and open borders for humane immigration reform. Earthjustice- Our planet’s well-being is vital to our present and future generations. Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law organization, works to uphold and fight for the environment, representing each client for free. Working to get clean air, clean water, energy, and more, Earthjustice needs YOU to help them keep fighting. Donate here.

Sylvia Rivera Law Project- “The Sylvia Rivera Law Project works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.” Donate here.

UNICEF- UNICEF is a humanitarian organization to work for the rights of every child worldwide. Some of their work include basic education and gender equality, protecting children from abuse, exploitation, or violence, and child survival and development. Donate here

Doctors without Borders- A non-profit organization of doctors and healthcare workers that help people worldwide who are affected by “conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care” by providing emergency medical aid. Donate here.

Amnesty International - This organization helps to spread awareness and raise money for issues such as human rights and the protection of migrants and refugees.They are currently raising awareness for an unfair execution pertaining to a young girl named Zeinab who escaped an abusive marriage. Gendered Intelligence - Gendered Intelligence is an organization based in the UK that works mainly with the trans community, specifically young trans people from 8-25. Their work focuses on increasing understanding within gender diversity. They “deliver trans youth programmes, support for parents and carers, professional development and trans awareness training for all sectors and educational workshops for schools, colleges, Universities and other educational settings.” Donate. Sisters Uncut - This organization fights against women’s rights and the issues of domestic violence. Their main goals are to have safety for ALL women and to prioritize domestic violence services/continue to have funding and restore the funding that has been cut. Donate here!

Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants- This is a movement that also discusses the protection of migrants and refugees as well as how Europe is promoting a negative image of them, saying they are homophobic in order to pit the LGBTQIA+ community against them. “LGBTQ people in Europe are being pitted against migrants,who we’re toldare homophobic and pose a threat to gay rights. We refuse to allow our sexualities to be used as weapons of border enforcement.”
