Sh*t People Have Actually Said to People With LQBTQ+ Parent(s)

This is about the experiences of people with LGBTQ+ parent(s), and that in itself is radical. Our experience is more talked about than listened to: “Are they ‘well adjusted’?” “Will 'gay marriage' make more of them?” “Should their parents be parents?”
Our experience is different to that of other members of the LGBTQ+ community, but we are a part of that community, regardless of our own sexual or gender identities. And our experience deserves to be listened to, recognised and even celebrated.

Instead our identities are turned into statistics and debates. In this series - The Queerspawn Speaks - I hope to talk about the different aspects of this experience in a way that is multidimensional, positive and negative, but most-importantly true to our lived-experience.

No to Pink Capitalism: LGBT+ Brands & People to Support

Pride month is over, but LGBT+ people need your support all year round. One way to directly support them is by choosing where you put your money. Companies have caught onto the fact that queerness makes them money (hence the Pride launches throughout June in high street stores) but where does the money go after you spend it? Do these stores have a long-term commitment to LGBT+ rights, or is it exclusively one month a year? Is it only for cis white gays, or is it inclusive of queer people of colour and trans people? Does the CEO care if the money in his (or her or their, but most likely his) pocket is from queer people or from queerphobes?
Buying from corporations is always an ethical mess, from sweatshop labour to workers’ wages to plagiarising the designs of smaller stores. This past Tuesday marked the end of indie singer Melanie Martinez’s career as she knew it. Within the span of an hour, she had lost over 1000 subscribers and even more supporters. Why? Her former best friend Timothy Heller accused her of rape: in a tweet detailing her case surrounding the assault, Timothy claimed that Melanie had “performed oral sex” on her and then was “penetrated by a sex toy,” after Melanie reportedly “convinced her to smoke weed.” This is a terrible crime, so why was the response so different from all of the other assault cases that have come out recently?
