Mom Magic: Jinmee Choi

Mom Magic is a Risen series dedicated to make our mothers feel like the queens they are. They've raised us to feel like royalty, so now it's their turn to wear the crown! In this series, we will talk a LOT about our moms and take the time to make them feel something with what we do, creatively! Have a great Mother's Day to you and your moms!

"What is your mom like? Describe her in a sound and a smell."

My mom is the most intriguing painting in The Louvre. It's not exactly the most popular price of art, but it gets you standing in front it for ten minutes, trying to figure out the meaning behind it. What purpose do those endless curves and valleys serve? Why was the dot placed here and not there? She is a lighthouse, always on the lookout for her children and ready to guide them in case of an emergency. She is also a home. My home. She held me for nine months, shielding me and keeping me alive, and she is still my home. When I come back from somewhere, she is the one I have missed the most, my home sweet home. She often smells like Korean skincare, fresh and bringing me back to my roots. Other times she smells like freshly ground coffee or or gochujang, two of my favorite scents.

"What is something you love about your mom? What is something that you usually take for granted about her?"

My mother has done so much for me. She left her family and her friends and moved to a country she barely knew, where she had to learn a new language so that me and my brothers could have what she didn't and couldn't have. There are so many things, big and little, my mom has done for me that I forget about until Mother's Day rolls around. I only see the things she didn't do, even when she did them for my well-being. But today I realize I am so blessed to have my mom. I love her so much and I hope you know how much I love you, Mom.

A letter to my mom.
