The Philosophy of Queerness

SOCRATES, THE PRICK WHO HAD A POINT: A Poem About Gender

Derrida, the name on my palm,
said something like
meaning
is generated through
“the potentially
endless
process
of referring to
other, absent signifiers”

what i think this means,
is that i cannot say
today i am boy
without tasting the lack
of girl
(and other,
absent, signifiers)

but then i am the same.
bare legs and crooked mouth,
tripping on names dropped
from shaking hands
Simone says:
one is not born,
but rather becomes,
a woman.

so i listen.
i become.
this is what makes me Woman:
things constantly there,
even on days
when i am none.
