"We can say, ‘separate the art from the artist’ but what about the women whose lives these men have utterly demolished?"

Every 2 minutes, another American is sexually assaulted. Many victims are being blamed for being sexually assaulted because of how they dress, claiming that they were “asking” for it.
Just like respect, rape is a learned behavior. People don’t become rapists because someone failed to teach them something; they become rapists because they’ve been taught abuse. 1 in 8 abused kids become abusive and tend to have multiple victims. This is why abusers keep replenishing themselves. Former FBI profiler, Roy Hazelwood says, “My research on serial rape supports the view that a large number of sexual criminals have been victims of physical, sexual, or psychological abuse.”
Saying phrases like “boys will be boys” and “she shouldn’t wear those type of clothes” is NOT an excuse for rape. Instead of telling women to wear more clothes, we should tell men to control themselves. Telling women to wear more clothes perpetuates slut-shaming. Telling someone that they’re a slut/whore because they’re wearing something that they feel comfortable in can affect their mentality.
Anyone can get raped and anyone can be a rapist. Men also fall victim to rape. Many people don’t believe that men can get raped due to the fact that it’s not very common for a male to be raped but it happens. 2.78 million males in the United States have been victims of rape and sexual assault. If you’re in a relationship, don’t have sex without your partner’s consent; that is still considered rape.

Teach the kids at a young age to control themselves and to never hurt anybody. Be supportive to one another instead of making them feel worse about the situation. Remember to report the situation, or else a rapist can move onto their next victim. You can face a felony and face a prison sentence for a year or more if you commit rape. We need to defeat rape culture for all the victims that have suffered through it.
“Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there.”
